The Music Post-Graduation Program of the School of Music and Drama of the Federal University of Goiás (UFG) and the Brazilian Association of Cognition and Musical Arts (ABCM) are pleased to invite for the V Symposium of Cognition and Musical Arts – International (V SIMCAM), to be held in the city of Goiânia, between 26 and May 2009. The International Symposium on Cognition and Musical Arts is a scientific forum of an interdisciplinary nature. Its focus lies on the discussion and dissemination of new research on the cognitive processes and mechanisms underlying the perception and production of all musical arts.
CENTRAL THEME:
MUSICAL COGNITION, CREATIVE PROCESSES AND THE TEACHING OF MUSIC
ABCM symposia have, continually, suggested for discussion the following topic themes:
- The mind and the perception of musical arts
- The mind and the production of musical arts
- The Musical arts, linguistics, semiotics and cognition
- Technology, musical arts and the mind
- Musical arts and social cognition
- The parallel development of musical arts and the mind
Important Deadlines for the V SIMCAM:
Deadline for the submission of works (1st call): 2 Feb 2009
Results: 16 Feb 2009
Deadline for the full papers (2nd call): 31 Mar 2009
Authors are kindly requested to submit their abstracts sending them in the "Submit Papers" menu option of this site.
Submissions are solicited for the following modalities:
- Thematic spoken papers
- Poster presentation
- Demonstration sessions
- Special posters session for undergraduate students
- Thematic spoken papers (open to all researchers)
- These sessions are reserved for full papers, resulting from concluded research work.
- 1st call: send abstracts with a maximum length of 500 words.
- Full works for the publication in the proceedings: text, with between 3000 and 5000 words, according to the norms presented below.

Professional posters session (open to independent researchers, professors and graduate students).
- This session is reserved for full papers, referring to ongoing researches.
- 1st call: send extended abstracts with length between 1000 an 1200 words.
- Full work for the publication in the proceedings: revised abstract (following the indications of the Refereeing Board), according to the norms presented below.
OBS1: Beyond the traditional exhibition of the posters in the common area during the event, a projection of an image of the poster will take place in short sessions by the end of the oral communication sessions. The author of an approved poster shall attach to the final text an image of the poster, possibly summarized, in JPEG (300 dpi) and come to the symposium prepared to invite the fellow attendees with a short, 2-minute speech during a projection section to be scheduled.
OBS2: Audio demonstrations, complementing the information of the posters, will be allowed (using equipment and earphones provided by the author). Simcam 5 also encourages the giving out of copies dos posters, printed in format A4, during the event.
- Demonstration sessions (open to all researchers)
- These sessions are reserved for work that have a practical application resulting from the research (techniques of performance, of instrument making, of software, etc).
- 1ª call: send extended abstracts with length between 1000 an 1200 words.
- Full work for the publication in the proceedings: revised abstract (following the indications of the Refereeing Board) according to the norms presented below. At that moment the author shall indicate clearly the needed material for the demonstrations (audio-visual, instrument, computer, etc.).
- Posters special session for undergraduate students (works done under supervision)
- This session is reserved for complete works, resulting from ongoing or concluded researches.
- 1st call: send extended abstracts with length between 1000 an 1200 words.
- Full work for the publication in the proceedings: revised abstract (following the indications of the Refereeing Board) according to the norms presented below.
OBS1: The authors of the 4 best works sent in this category will be invited to expand their texts and present them as an oral communication in the session for undergraduate students.
OBS2: Beyond the traditional exhibition of the posters in the common area during the event, a projection of an image of the poster will take place in short sessions by the end of the oral communication sessions. OBS4: The authors of the three best posters will win a prize.
NORMS for the SUBMISSION of WORKS
- Information that may identify the author(s) must be eliminated from the text of the submitted abstracts, in order to assure the anonymity of the reviewing process.
- The texts of the abstracts (of the 1st call, simple or expanded) and of the full papers (2nd call) shall have the following items, as necessary:
- Introduction (presentation of the problem e justification)
- Objectives (general and specific)
- Method (with theoretical support? ground?)
- Results (partial of final)
- Sub-areas of knowledge (according to the topic themes above).
- The final works of posters and demonstrations, sent to SIMCAM 5 must be in electronic format, as .rtf files, and include: title, expanded abstract of no more than 1200 words, plus the bibliography according to ABNT norm, and 3 key-words.
- The final works (2nd call) of the oral communications, sent to SIMCAM 5 must be presented in electronic format, as .rtf files, and include: title, abstract of no more than 300 words, and 3 keywords. The full article must have between 3000 and 5000 words, plus the bibliography according to ABNT norm.
- Articles with images must obey to the following norms:
- Every image must be saved as an individual file (never included inside the article), in one of the following formats:
.tif;
.jpg, of medium-high resolution (for photos); and
.gif or .png (images with solid colors, such as graphics and tables).
- The resolution must be 300 dpi.
- Every image must be in grayscale, never in color.
- The image must be named in the text as: Figure #, or Graphic #, or Illustration#. The name of each archive must be in exact correspondence to the legend in the text of the article (for example, legend: Figure 1: Diagram of the Model Source-Filter; file: Figure_1.gif).
- Posters. Dimensions of the posters: 90 cm x 100 cm
- Poster design must stress the inclusion of illustrations (photos, graphics, maps, scores, etc.) that explain or elucidate the included text. The amount of text shall be kept to the minimal and the font size legible from about two meters far. Only main references must be included and in smaller font size.
